Just had an amazing dram from the extra whisky advent calendar I picked up last year. It’s a 9-year Caol Ila single cask bottling. Weighs in at a whopping 57.6% but drinks way smoother than that. Chocolate, dark cherries, and smoke. Fantastic.

#CaolIla 9yo single cask #WhiskyAdvent sample, without a splash of water: eugh. what is this nasty, briny, peaty nonsense? no thank u, clearly peaty #whisky still ain't for me.

The same, with a moderate splash of water: whoa. this is completely different now? it's /almost/ good!

Likely the most stark change of character (nose and palate alike) in a dram from adding water, that I've yet experienced. Usually it is /far/ more subtle!

Smoke and a little fruit on the nose. Palate is a nice smoke and a little citrus maybe? Pretty tasty.

A search says this is a Caol Ila and I can see it.

I brought an offering of MAC’s #rubywoo, told her my news, and shared a wee dram of #caolila, one of her favourite single malts.

She’s in a lovely spot, surrounded by lefty sounding writers and social workers and an economist and an “international man of mystery” (no joke). I think we’ve done her proud.
