A couple times a week I stroll by the #electronics recycling bins at work and see if there's anything interesting being discarded. Today I found these absolutely massive #capacitors, easily the biggest I've ever seen.

Does anyone know what these might have been used for? Maybe for industrial power or RF settings? They're rated for 370 and 440VAC.

Almost ten years ago, I bought this little item from Amazon:

It has been a brilliant investment. Identifies #resistors, #capacitors, #FETs, #MOSFETs, #diodes, ... Just about any kind of simple #electronic #component, including bi- and unipolar #semiconductors, I've plugged into it.

The manufacturers of Electrolytic Capacitors specify their lifetime at the highest temperature. A 125C 2000h capacitor will have a much greater lifetime at lower tamperatures. In Power applications you need to account the self heating trough ripple as well.

To store #electronic #parts that are relatively small and flat I use these business card holder sheets. Most #resistors, #capacitors, #inductors, #transistors, #VoltageRegulators, DIP #ic's and other thru-hole parts can be easily stored and accessed in this way.
I am slowly starting to add clear #ThermalTransfer labels to the pockets.

Finally, got word about my amplifier from the #repair shop: two capacitors (with old gear, it's always capacitors!) were not functioning properly. Their values while measuring seemed fine so they started replacing the caps in the output section of the amplifier until it started to work. I wonder in which way #capacitors can be broken that they seem fine when measured.
