First time I have noticed this visitor. It is a tiger bee fly (Xenox tigrinus), which makes sense since they parasitize the larvae of carpenter bees. We have lots of carpenter bees in our fence. #CapitolHillBackyards #insect #fly

Another reason to grow catnip is for the pollinators, like this syrphid fly called the Eastern Calligrapher. It has this common name due to the intricate etched patterns on its body. Their coloration and pattern mimics bees and wasps, but they don't have a stinger. #CapitolHillBackyards #insects #bugs

These are photos of the same backyard in 2008-2009. There was a thick concrete pad that had to be ripped out to get to bare dirt. That big tree fell over right after we built the shed and missed by a small margin. #CapitolHillBackyards

The backyard is going crazy after all the rain. I need need to remove the last serviceberry tree that died. The last two years I have been planting elephant ears where the trees were. They like the humidity, but have to be watered. #CapitolHillBackyards
