Reminder that not everyone who needs #captions is #blind.

People on text-only web-browsers, data-saving connections, #translation software, #ScreenReaders, and people who are simply #VisionImpaired use these sites on a text-only basis, but are capable of looking at the #images / #art. For them, the #caption helps them decide if they want to.

For three months after my #COVID infection started in my eyes, I could see once the blindfold came off, but still it took a lot of work.

Is anyone else having issues with the #captioning on #YouTube when using #Chromecast with your #TV, i.e. the captions turn off after an #AdBreak? I'm getting really frustrated with it, it's bad enough having adverts seemingly every other minute and the constant #PopUps for their Premium upgrade. Urgh.

I've been watching a number of #documentaries from German SWR network--and they have absolutely the best #captioning : text in bright contrasting colors *and* a separate color for each person speaking, so one can graphically see a conversation.

So I made a video that's still relevant these days.

Sure I got copyrighted claim...which is in dispute review. At least it's now available for public viewing. It's a matter of time before it's taken down. The difference between other videos available is the refined subtitle rather than their build-in auto generated captioning as I was not happy with it. Quality is not great tho.

Disgusted yet again by streaming companies not bothering to have humans check their automated #captioning for obvious errors. If the bots can do the basics how much more could it cost to have a human review them? I shudder to think what the audio description might sound like.

e.g.
"loved" becomes "tapped"?
no distinction between father named "Francis" and daughter named "Frances"?
And that's just the start of the issues with this Elizabethan drama.

I know that I can continue to watch these because our household uses them so that the one person with hearing loss can watch them without the volume at levels that the rest of us would find painful. It nonetheless yanks me out of the drama when I see such obvious #transcription errors.

I can do without the trend of #TV stations publishing articles with crappy, autogenerated, text file "transcripts" of their clips that are error-filled and incomplete. If I wanted to watch & listen to their coverage, I'd turn on a television. #news #captioning 📺

Boosted this, but it bears repeating: nearly all #Mastodon clients support easy #image #captioning - often including builtin OCR! Please strongly consider forming a habit of doing so.

I have, and it was not hard at all. I was kinda spotty at this on the birdsite even after they added it as a 1st class feature, but I've taken pains not to repeat that mistake here.

You can even tell the client to remind you if you forgot a #caption, before posting! 🙌

First, here is the thing about #AI: sometimes we get stuck on trying to solve one problem (e.g.: #generalintelligence holy grail), while for other problems progress is exponential (e.g.: just 10 years ago, nobody thought that we could do live #conversation live #captioning and #translation). From that perspective, even if it looked “rubbish”, it’s only going to get better! Second, even humans make rubbish #art, so we should cut the AI some slack! Hehe!

I've been working on an #android side project for on-device podcast transcription using the open source library Vosk.
