When I'm on mobile, the lack of captions on images is particularly unnerving due to the small amount of screen space available. Doubly more so when it's a barely legible small font wall of text.
Seriously people, #captionYourImages. It's low effort high return. I understand that some of you may have a physical disability that makes it hard or painful to type out a lot of text, but I seriously doubt that's the case for most of you.
@clayrivers @Alikufogo itβs a cool creative fun act to write detailed image captions for those without them in your timeline. #CaptionYourImages #CamelCaseYourTags
I must admit, some images challenged my description capabilities π

Until I joined Mastodon, I hadnβt realised why people described their photos - I thought it was just a bit arty farty. Then I found out why they do it and I do it too now (unless I forget!). As well as helping visually impaired people to experience the photos, I also enjoy finding the words to describe my photos. #Blindnessandvisualimpairment #visuals #inclusion #captionyourimages

Dear @thunderbird
Could you please remember captioning your images?
Some instances offer automatic #OCR which can help grab any text in your image, though proofreading is still important. You can also follow @PleaseCaption to be reminded whenever you post an image without captioning it.

@torproject
Dear Tor Project,
There are more #blind #screenreader users on Mastodon than you might expect. So, can you please consider adding descriptions to your images? It can not only be helpful for visual impaired people, but also for #autistic folks who sometimes find the context helpful, and for anyone with a low bandwith connection or strict dataplan who doesn't want to load the images. Or for people who don't want to use a GUI for mastodon and prefer a terminal client.
Some instances offer automatic #OCR which can help grab any text in your image, though proofreading is still important. You can also follow @PleaseCaption to be reminded whenever you post an image without captioning it.
And don't worry, a highly detailed description or fancy writing, while always nice, is definitely not required. Something is nearly always better than nothing when it comes to alt text.
Thank you for reading. :)

@Tutanota
The reason why I prefer Tutanota over Protonmail is the great customer support and such. And the activity on social media.
That gives it much more a certain kind of good feeling.
Though there is one thing that makes that feeling a lot less, which is that you keep forgetting to add image descriptions, while I reminded you already quite often recently to please #CaptionYourImages
@Tutanota please remember to #CaptionYourImages.
I already mentioned this once.
@kde
Could you please add image descriptions to your images?
In the Mastodon web interface you can do that by clicking to 'edit' your image.
This is so that users who have to use a screenreader can also know what it is that your images shows.
And not only blind users have profit of it. It can also provide usefull information for authistic people.
And there are even more users have have profit of an image description.
People who don't have much data available or have a slow internet connection might not want to load images or are not able to, so they need a description.
The same goes for people who use a terminal client, like I am currently using.
I would be very pleased if you could start to caption your images.
There is also a mastodon group of people that can help providing image descriptions.
(I don't know exactly what it was anymore, but I can search for it tomorrow)

@antifaintl
Hi there. I have not gotten any response from you about potentially adding image descriptions to your posts yet. Maybe you missed my first message? I've heard that Antifa is a disability rights supporter, and it seems that ableism would go against your principals so I assume it's not that I'm being ignored.
Image descriptions are helpful for #blind and #VI users, but also some #autistic people and those on low bandwidth connections or strict dataplans who do not want to load images.
Some instances now offer automatic OCR which can grab text from images for you, though it does require some basic proofreading for accuracy. Also, there is a bot: @PleaseCaption who will remind you when ever you accidentally post an image without a caption.
It isn't necessary to be extremely detailed or to write especially well, even if it's nice, because something is pretty much always better than nothing when it comes to alt text.

@kde Hi there! I'm a #blind #screenreader user.
Have you considered adding descriptions to your images? It can be helpful not just for #VI people like me but also for #autistic folks who sometimes find the context helpful, and for anyone with a low bandwidth connection or strict dataplan who doesn't want to load the images.

@pluralistic I notice that many of your images have no #captions and as a #blind #screenreader user I always appreciate that even if it's a minimal description, though of course more is better.
It's not just #VI users who appreciate them either, it's also people on low bandwidth connections or strict dataplans, and some #autistic people find the context they provide to be useful.
Several instances now offer automatic #OCR as an option which can help [though manual proofreading is always a good idea] and you can also follow @PleaseCaption to be reminded if you forget to caption an image when posting.
Thanks!

@antifaintl Hi there, I'm a #blind #screenreader user requesting that you please add #captions to your images as it's helpful not just for #VI users like me, but also those on low bandwidth connections and strict dataplans, as well as some #autistic people who find the context helpful.
Some instances offer automatic #OCR which can help with the process [though manual proof reading is still important] but either way something is almost always better than nothing and a super in depth or very well worded description isn't necessary even if it's nice.
You can also follow @PleaseCaption to be reminded when you post without adding one.

@pixelfed Hi there! As a #blind screen reader user, I would really appreciate it if you'd take the time to #captionyourimages as it would really help with #accessibility
And it's not just people like me who appreciate them either, it's users on low bandwidth or metered connections who don't want to load the full res picture, those with #autism who sometimes find the context helpful, the huge percentage of those with preexisting visual impairments [#VI] which includes many people over 55 ETC.
It doesn't have to be anything incredibly detailed or artfully written, but something is nearly always better than nothing. I believe that their is even an option to automatically #OCR images now which should give you a head start.
