I thought the argument went out of fashion, but nope, here and there, it comes up again. So, here is an explainer by @hausfath:

Sobering, perplexing, frustrating, but this reflects well on the current status of the global political strategy to tackle

Thanks to my daily newsletter from for alerting me to this article from on why the media too often ignores the connection between climate change and meat and dairy consumption (and the industries that support it).

Secondly, this more critical assessment in , also useful to read. One of the critiques is that these are gross oversimplifications - aggregates themselves misleading;often wrong assumptions; and who are these guys to assess literally everything? Etc etc - and yes, of course agree: anthropology is all about taking apart these kinds of meta-analyses, I do this too!
But we do need simplified frameworks too; and to recognise

This year is shaping up to be one of top four warmest years on record – and has a modest chance of being the warmest on record.
Exceptionally warm conditions are being driven by the end of a persistent triple-dip La NiΓ±a and a rapid transition into warmer conditions.

Exceptionally warm conditions are being driven by the end of a persistent triple-dip La NiΓ±a and a rapid transition into warmer El NiΓ±o conditions.

Taking the first three months of the year, global surface temperatures so far are tied as the fourth warmest on record, after 2016, 2020 and 2017."

"The analysis shows that the number of people experiencing all-time high heat events has increased dramatically over the past three decades. Overall, about half the world’s population is living in regions that saw their hottest daily temperatures since 1950 during the past 10 years"

β€œGrowth in and gas production ends immediately in ’s latest pathway for staying below 1.5C, new analysis reveals.
The admission that continued growth in fossil fuel output is incompatible with 1.5C is significant, because it comes from one of the world’s biggest public oil and gas companies.”

"The cuts and freezes in fuel duty since 2010 means the UK’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are as much as 7% higher than they would have been, Carbon Brief analysis shows.

The analysis comes after a spring budget that once again froze fuel duty instead of increasing it in line with inflation, as well as maintaining a supposedly temporary 5 pence-per-litre cut"

We just started a new electric scheme on the island of the Netherlands.

A back-of-the-envelope calculation seems to suggest that lifecycle CO2 emissions/km are only 10% of a private-owned petrol car. This is based on carbonbrief.org/factcheck-how-
(Our charging stations use renewable energy).

I realize that there are many variables involved, but does someone know of a CO2 emission analysis based on an existing sharing scheme?

The UK’s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 3.4% in 2022, according to new Carbon Brief analysis, ending a post-Covid rebound.

Emissions from coal and gas fell in 2022, due to strong growth in clean energy, above-average temperatures and record-high fossil fuel prices suppressing demand.
