The Orkney islands are to test two electric ferries for commuting between its outlying islands as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions from shipping.

The battery-powered hydrofoil ferries, whose hulls are raised above the water, are part of a three-year, £15.5m demonstration project funded by the UK government, due to start in March 2024.

Github actions are designed with no CPU efficiency in mind.

It terrifies me how much time Github actions spent doing same things again and again in cases where it could easily be mitigated by cache and a good CI system design that targeted to spent resources effectively in general.

Unsurprisingly Github Actions billing is based on minutes spent repeatedly doing those things.

What’s the greenhouse gas impact of even a single day of the war in Ukraine, or similar conflicts?
I’ve thought about this from time to time over the years, but I’m glad this team is putting in the work to attach credible numbers to military emissions. The remark that they might be equivalent to those from the entire world’s passenger car fleet is sobering.

Fading forests
The Amazon, the Congo or Australia – it's the same story

"Many ecologists say that the selective logging permitted by the Forest Code is often not sustainable. That’s because the trees that are removed are generally slow-growing species with dense wood, whereas the species that grow back have less-dense wood, so they absorb less carbon in the same space. And few companies follow the requirements for selective logging, such as limiting road construction or the number of trees cut...About 90% of selective logging in the Amazon is estimated as illegal, and therefore doesn’t follow any of these procedures."

You're Paying for Kim Kardashian's Private Jet Travel. Here's How.

youtube.com/watch?v=2VTEu6jNSE

Every time Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, or Elon Musk take a trip on their private jet, you’re subsidizing it. Private jets make up one in six flights. But they contribute just 2% of the taxes to fund airports—while we pay 70%. It’s time to end that billionaire tax break.

"Fossil fuels benefited from record subsidies of $13m (£10.3m) a minute in 2022, according to the International Monetary Fund, despite being the primary cause of the climate crisis.

The analysis found the total subsidies for oil, gas and coal in 2022 were $7tn (£5.5tn). That is equivalent to 7% of global and almost double what the world spends on . Countries have pledged to phase out subsidies for years to ensure the price of fossil fuels reflects their true environmental costs, but have achieved little to date."

"The nations, which cause 80% of global emissions, pledged to phase out “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies in 2009. However, the G20 poured a record $1.4tn (£1.1tn) into fossil fuel subsidies in 2022, according an estimate by the International Institute for Sustainable Development thinktank. The reported in June that fossil fuel and agricultural subsidies combined could amount to $12tn (£9.5tn) a year and were causing “environmental havoc”.

American forests, absorbing more carbon dioxide than they emit, could become net sources of greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. This is due to climate change, wildfires, logging, and land use changes. The loss of forest carbon sinks could accelerate global warming and threaten biodiversity and human health.

Nothing they’re saying about motorway speeds is new or extreme either. Just proven effective, good at reducing , slashing , improving road safety, and makes well funded public transport more appealing.

“transport scientists from across Austria announced their support at the start of February for a 100km/h speed limit on motorways as a low-hanging fruit when it comes to lessening the environmental impact of the transport sector.”

Do it!
