@Cyrus @kevinrns Everybody who has ever promoted or traded in 'carbon credits' should be prosecuted for fraud. The idea was obviously fraudulent from the start; no one can claim that they were fooled.

Energy-intensive sectors such as steel, cement, chemicals and aviation have been given €98.5bn in free carbon permits by the EU in the last nine years, “in direct contradiction with the polluter pays principle”, according to the WWF.

The free permits did not come with #climate conditions attached, such as increasing energy efficiency. Some polluters were also able to make billions in windfall profits by selling the permits they did not use.

I wonder whether the people who came up with the idea of #CarbonTrading thought that it might somehow do some good, or whether they knew how harmful it would be? Were they naive idealistic idiots, or evil cynical bastards?

And the governments who continue to promote the idea, like the Scottish Government, do they now know?

How can they not?

I deprecate the practice of crossposting from Twitter to here, but yesterday on Twitter I read a thread which startled me so profoundly that I'm going to do it.

Essentially, Tesla, by carbon trading, is enabling the continued production of gas guzzlers by other manufacturers. Buying a Tesla doesn't make the planet greener, but the opposite.

And it's all done through the financial alchemy of #CarbonTrading.
