@draNgNon @skinnylatte Not just the tech salaries, a whole bunch of regulatory negligence also helped make things worse (#CarCentric development and SFH zoning is a major contributor in North America).
In the end though, that still leaves delivery drivers (and everyone else) needing to cope with the costs that induces.
@enriquericos Definitely. I'm not sure how it is in Spain, but over here in Canada current urban planning is nothing short of disastrous (we went all-in on following USA's #CarCentric insanity).
@teamonkey @iinavpov @SteveHynd @mariusrime @Npars01 Even just getting rid of #CarCentric development would do that for USA & Canada.
The design of our infrastructure and land-use policies is unfathomably stupid.
it's #SpitballSunday
(yes i just made this hashtag up because I wanted an excuse to post the following)
#MassTransit and #PublicTransit
because #CarbonReduction in #Transportation
also because less #LandUse footprint with higher density
also because less time wasted finding a freaking parking space
also because better #HabitatConnectivity with a mixed matrix of green spaces amongst urbanization, serving as #WildlifeCorridors
this in turn improves #watershed recharge and reduces #stormwater management and #flooding problems because there's less #impermeable surfaces
mixed matrix of businesses, residences, and green spaces improves local economic #resilience by helping local businesses, and also improves #SenseOfPlace
sure, some people will want to live far out in the exurbs on big lawns but not everyone should be condemned to this #CarCentric infrastructure
#spitballsunday #Masstransit #publictransit #carbonreduction #transportation #landuse #habitatconnectivity #wildlifecorridors #Watershed #stormwater #flooding #impermeable #resilience #SenseOfPlace #carcentric
The #carcentric #Berlin continues its way back into the 1960ies of the car-based city.
The new center-right city government wants to evaluate first "how much #parking space would be lost by building new or extending existing #tramway public transit lines". This is not normal anymore, it's a shame for #Germany 's capital. It's like being the wrong way driver on the Interstate - after halting bicycle infrastructure development and everything which "reduces parking space".

@EvilGinger013 @SomeAnoTooter @qag @Andres4NY > I need a car to get to places miles away from my home,
That's a lot more the actual problem.
Your country is using that idiotic #CarCentric development.
Turns out it's also a lot easier to build nicer accommodations for all if everything isn't ridiculously stretched out for no good reason.
We told you so. That's the consequence of having voted #CDU in #Berlin. All #bicycle infrastructure projects stopped, no more new bike paths as soon that even one single #car #parking slot gets lost.
Berlin and CDU. Realizing Robert Moses' destruction of #NYC to #Berlin - 70 years later.

It's Time We Stopped Building These Horrible Places https://youtu.be/KGyWqaol8qs
We have to move away from the car. Even if global warming wasn’t a threat, cars are unsustainable.

@koherecoWatchdog @karolherbst @ShadowJonathan @miki Tbh it doesn't help that there are like... 3 cities that are cycleable without it requiring being at least a bit suicidal in my country.
That bumps up the cost a lot (in other words the poor & precariat are fucked, we have very little public housing).
SFH zoning & #CarCentric development has been an unmitigated disaster.
If like me you can just work remotely then that's good, but otherwise you're mostly out of luck.
The tendency of the Canadian people to mindlessly import nonsensical ideas from USA and apply them unquestioningly is some shameful idiocy.
#EuclideanZoning, #CarCentric development and SFH zoning are some of those things which have demonstrably strained our economy, worsened our public health problems and did little but create problems.
#euclideanzoning #carcentric #urbanism #canada
@animeirl @MischievousTomato @7666 @maid @shibao @mia Yeah there are a few #urbanism channels that go quite a bit into how USA fucked its infrastructure for shit & giggles.
Not that we're much better in Canada, we unquestioningly copied the same mindless idiocy of #CarCentric development.
Cars should basically require professional pilot skills to drive on public roads and the garbage infrastructure is used as an excuse not to implement that.
#Berlin in #Germany doing #cityplanning like #RobertMoses in #NYC did with appalling results. They really want to tear down buildings for a highway (Autobahn, like Interstate) THROUGH THE CITY. Germany's #carcentric car-centric planning gets a renaissance - it is 1960 again.
#berlin #germany #cityplanning #robertmoses #nyc #carcentric
@miko Probably very.
Especially in America (USA/Canada), where third places largely don't exist anymore if you're not living in one of the few cities that didn't entirely self-destruct to make place for #CarCentric development & #CarDependency.
Making new friends in such conditions is pretty hard. Your coworkers generally aren't your friends (they're acquaintances), and there's nowhere else to really make friends in suburban hell.
@timeo_danaos @requiem They were right too.
Steel wheels on steel rails work much better, are more efficient and don't have nearly as many catastrophic failures.
Instead of accepting the blatantly obvious, we instead made this ridiculous #CarCentric society.
A good summary of what needs to change in #Winnipeg in regards to #walkability and a change away from #CarCentric thinking.
Plagued in the comments, of course, by people upset by… the possibility of a better city.
#winnipeg #walkability #carcentric
@StillIRise1963 @shoq I think suburbs, SFH-zoning & #CarCentric development did a lot more for that in general.
That was the birth of shopping centers and massive #CarDependent malls, and the death of nearby shops.
Long before the internet was a thing, and before Minitel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel).
@LunaDragofelis @eviloatmeal @Elizafox Even with buses & trains, if you fundamentally fucked up your infrastructure with unwise zoning & #CarCentric development, you're going to need to rebuild a lot more than just that.
@timorl @carlschwan @Aknorals #Canada is only slightly less terrible.
#CarDependency & #CarCentric development played a role in it, as did propaganda by the automotive industry.
#canada #cardependency #carcentric
@Skyjester @BrentToderian Have you thought about doing something about your apparent complete lack of public maintenance and your housing crisis?
You're also implying that Montreal has no homeless which well... it does because #Canada followed into USA's idiotic #CarCentric development patterns.
