The #US #legal system is not at all about #justice, but about justifying our #carceral #PrisonIndustrialComplex which imprisons people at a much higher rate than any other country—about as many as #China—while, obscenely, inhumanely, and unjustly, creating massive #profits for both "#PrivatePrison" #corporations and contractors for #government-run #jails and #prisons.
Our entire system must be rebuilt, and #courtrooms need to be included in that process.

That’s a bottom line question: is there some way to order society such that even those who are biochemically predisposed to what we call sociopathy or psychopathy can fit in? Is there some natural variation of the human psyche which is inherently intolerable to the rest of a working society? Is #utopia possible? Is the best we can do a #carceral state, broad capital punishment, or penal colonies? Do we need internal predators to stay sharp as a species?

finally, wrote about the GOP's war on #schoollunches, which is steeped in #carceral logic. #BenShapiro wants to police kids, not give them help, because he hates helping people and fears feeding the #hungry will reduce #inequity. https://www.editorialboard.com/punish-the-hungry/

I wonder if as #abolitionists we should see failures of the #carceral justice system to charge the cops who lynch Black kids as opportunities to demonstrate better methods eg #RestorativeJustice. That sounds ghoulishly opportunistic but it's certainly healthier than than the state's answer. Engage the killer cops in conversations about their part in mending the injury they've done to the #community. This seems like the appropriate abolitionist response to me but I can see a lot of ways where it could be really dangerous and counterproductive.

These are the problems we find when govt requires so much control and oversight they lose sight of the goals you’d find in their guidance docs and strategy docs of supporting health and QOL.
Reminds me of many readings about #carceral spaces and #colonialism. That patronizing path that institutions can do things better. Even as we speak now about the expertise in ‘lived experience’ and how ‘community knows best’, we so often lose this in practice.
“States of Incarceration is that rare thing among books of its type: openly militant, yet thoughtful and self-aware, opting for even-handedness and sober self-assessment rather than the tired sloganeering typical of left-wing activism, or the edifying lyricism of defeat.”

Using Amazon's #Rekognition technology, #Spotlight use the moralising narrative of humanitarian uses to extend #carceral networks, putting marginalised consenting #sexworkers at-large (and their networks) at further risk, while expanding policing powers. The excuse is stopping child trafficking, but the practical applications show an expansion of the hostile terrain–featuring tech-augmented police harassment–that endangers folx in the first place. Sarah is one of many.

Today I got to moderate a panel at the UMass #Boston Women’s Policy Conference on #GunViolence. Our focus was on creating holistic models of policy, programs, and practices that move us away from #carceral responses and instead address root causes. Invest in care and communities, not in incarceration.

Canada’s prison system continues to punish Black and Indigenous people, by Stephen Wentzell
«Un rapport récent du Bureau de l'enquêteur correctionnel montre que les mêmes obstacles systémiques identifiés il y a près de dix ans, notamment la discrimination et les préjugés raciaux, restent aussi répandus et persistants que jamais.
Le traitement des Noirs et des Autochtones dans les prisons fédérales canadiennes ne s'est pas amélioré au cours de la dernière décennie. À bien des égards, il a empiré.»

Hi, I'm #newhere, trying out Mastodon for the first time after being pretty active on #lawtwitter!
I'm a #civilrights attorney who works on diminishing societal reliance on #carceral systems – #police, #jails, #prisons, #ICE detention, #surveillance, and supervision – in ways that will strengthen low-income and immigrant #AAPI communities. Previously, I worked for the #ACLU on divesting from police and reinvesting in communities.
