@mikemc303 @Techaltar It would be possible in the span of a few months to solve both the housing crisis and the need for so much commute if the will was there (there's so much empty pre-flattened land to go around).

The science of building & setting up is fairly mature by now.

Yes that means suburbs would need to be abandoned, they were never going to be sustainable.

( / suburbs can work somewhat.)

@screwtape @pkw @brokenix Fair point, there may be no amount that can make such change due to a categorical incapacity.

UBI with no public healthcare doesn't make sense. Much like UBI with private cars and makes no sense.

Providing basic decency for everyone precludes mandating worse for everyone (and so collectively being worse off).

@rysiek @AnnaAnthro Yeah, that's just more of the classist lawn bullshit.

() Suburbia and the fucked up culture that sprang from it needs to die out.

@inaforest @helenczerski Part of the reason for that is that suburbs shouldn't exist at all.

/ suburbs were a thing and they were far more reasonable.

@enmodo @igd_news 79% of the time wasted on a completely artificial problem that exists solely for the benefit of a few rich automotive/oil execs.

I wonder about the prevalence of police in lobbying interfering with attempts to fix fucked-up infrastructure to safeguard that easy revenue & victim stream.

That's probably also why roads don't get redesigned & changed to be safer and enforce safe driving behavior passively even when a root cause analysis of deadly incidents is done.

@saana @AmyZenunim Where would you even put those? has no third places or open public spaces and strict euclidean zoning means businesses are forbidden from mixing in with other residential buildings.

If that sounds like you're making a hellhole you cannot survive in without a car? Well that's because that's exactly what you're making.

@AmyZenunim Wait, the rancid part isn't hyperbole? Why in the world don't they at least freeze the meat?

Also lol leaving their assigned ghetto. I'd like the see them leave the hellhole they call a neighborhood without a car.

@StillIRise1963 @shoq I think suburbs, SFH-zoning & development did a lot more for that in general.

That was the birth of shopping centers and massive malls, and the death of nearby shops.

Long before the internet was a thing, and before Minitel (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel).

@thomasfuchs That's actually not quite true.

Some countries don't have 's fucked up infrastructure and , so one might very well be able to live their entirely life without a car (which is much preferable for the health reasons alone, nevermind all the others).

Conversely, in vast swathes of USA you cannot be a pedestrian without a death wish. Because there is no infrastructure to support your safe existence.

It's amazing that is doing worse than utility providers in certain warzones despite having nowhere near as reasonable an explanation for their problems.

I get that and doesn't help, but for fuck's sake, building in some redundancy wouldn't be asking for much. Many places are fed in a purely linear fashion.

@PoLaRobs I was there in 2010 (last time England and the US were in the group stage of the world cup together!), working for a few weeks at High Cross. Traffic was bad. We stayed in a surrounding village and we were . I can only imagine it getting worse if there was no plan. Still, I remember fondly that residential areas were concentrated and there was a lot more surrounding the city than we generally see here!

@jamesbicycle
Absolutely!
Oddly, i do not remember near as much back in the 60's & '70's when we were significantly less than now. It's a vicious that the more we fear the , the less time we spend outside and the thinner, draughtier and colder our everyday clothes have become (clothes for shopping, for work and for school.) What passes as today, so much of it is garbage.
