My partner moved into the memory care/assisted living place today (from rehab).

Fully expecting the first period may be rough but hopefully it's a good environment for her.

I have to resist trying to be over there all the time.

This should have been more obvious to me, but finally sinking in that I need to move to a new role in her life.

I'm no longer the hands-on caregiver. I need to learn to trust others to take good care of her day-to-day.

It's hard.

is an important aspect of why works for many people. Some are now also proposing that we use it to measure economic performance.

I have become a burden to everyone who I believed would be there for me no matter what. Nobody wants to deal with this shit.

I don’t blame any of them: life is hard enough without cancer. I just feel madd alone today.

Cancer caregivers who have been to the infusion center can tell you: the massaging recliners that patients use while mainlining poison look comfortable as hell, especially compared to the plastic kindergarten chairs that are meant for anyone with them.

My lifehack has become bringing a collapsible camping chair to save my aging hips from those unforgiving torture devices they supply. Please pass this to someone who seems like they don’t need help.

Less than 60 hours until movers show up at Dad's to move him from Independent living to assisted living. And now is the time the universe decides to have our roof pop another leak. Really? It couldn't wait until next week? It isn't even a heavy tropical rain. FFS.
Wednesday night will be the first time in 6 months that we haven't spent a minimum of 14 hours at Dad's. We were really looking forward to a rest. Guess not.

New initiative from CMS:
"On July 31, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a new voluntary nationwide model – the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model – a model test that aims to support people living with dementia and their unpaid caregivers."

Now "playing chicken" with supplemental oxygen.

Maintaining saturation in [88%, 100%) **all night long**, without a regulator, while not micromanaging an already restless patient, is quite a challenge.

And the oximeter incessantly beeps because the blood-pressure monitoring part of it is not being used. May be it just wants to give me company through the night, but I'd rather it not.

If this column touched you, three excellent recent books on and informed my perspective: "My Father's Brain" by Sandeep Jauhar, "Finding the Right Words" by Cindy Weinstein and Bruce Miller, and "Travelers to Unimaginable Lands" by Dasha Kiper. All worth reading.

I've been having so much fun playing BitBurner. It is basically like working at a place that lets me solve the problems I find. Basically the perfect job. But it really makes me miss normal life. Programming is so fucking fun and I wish I was getting paid for it.

I figure I've put in about $20-30k of work... illness sure is costly.

Well, effit! Dad's cold is
Sniffles, little cough, tired, no fever.
Not sure if any aides will work, so we are sketching out a plan to care for Dad.
Just spent last Sunday celebrating my retirement and birthday with family and friends. Had to tell them they may be exposed. At least we were out on the patio most of the time. Maybe they're ok.
I will test when I get home tomorrow.

so fwiw, if we want to use it... I did go ahead and create a group at @caregivers . Basically, if you follow it you see what anyone posts to that group. Similarly, if you post to the group, goes to everyone following. 🤷‍♂️

area folks...

Help would be appreciated!

I need to extend in-home caregiving network for my partner Alyssa: young-onset and (mainly) . She goes to a GREAT day program 3 days/week but the agency we're using for the other 2 days is struggling to find us reliable coverage.

Looking for recommendations of agencies or private caregivers to contact so we have more options!

We're in Needham.

Boosts would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

My partner’s parents are going into care so there’s lots of organising happening, but his and his sister’s phone numbers are swapped on the intake records — the number of calls he gets where the care-providers explicitly intended to call his sister is telling.

The assumption of the care burden on the daughter not the son is especially stark since he’s been equally involved in helping right from the start, and when he works flexibly from home while his sister works full time at an office.

Don’t even get me started on how often I’d get the call to collect a sick kid from school even when he was listed as first contact due to his job being more flexible than mine.

Shamefully sharing my latest blog post again, this time with fewer typos.

A long post on the struggle to find my way in a world I wasn't prepared for, and the challenges of making and keeping relationships while caring for another.
