Digging through the stuff in my sewing room and I came across two more pairs of defunct cargo shorts. Worn through seats and busted zippers = more work to mend than I am willing to do given that they fit nobody in the household right now.
Anyway, I don’t feel like making more cargo pocket bags now, but I do want to at some point. However, the shorts were bulky. So I cut them up and was able to store the parts I need for the bags more compactly.
The cargo pocket bag is finished! It’s exactly what I wanted at the start: a bag made out of cargo shorts and a lining from an old skirt. It’s got a rectangular bottom, and flaps at the top that button at the top to make a rectangle the same size. It’ll be a great knitting project bag (and probably other things). Sometimes I’ll clip a shoulder strap to the D rings.
Some of the stitching is wonky, but the cargo pockets got in the way at times. So it goes

Making good progress! I sewed the final buttonhole.
I pinned the flaps for the top closure to the bag, the straps for the D-rings, and then the lining. (I stabbed myself by accident with a pin, so I blotted my finger on a spot where it won’t be visible later. I started doing this on my own as a child, and then I found out that other people do the same thing.)
Finally I hand basted everything to hold it more securely for sewing.
No advice please.

Here’s the two rectangles I sewed together on three sides to make the lining. You can see the wrong side of the lining, and also the place where I stitched a pocket to it. There’s a crease up the middle of the rectangle because I also put a crease up the middle of the pocket and lined them up for placement.
The flat photo is the best depiction I’ve managed of the color.
no advice please; conversation about your similar projects is welcome, though!

Last night I cut out the bag bottom fabric. I had to cut it so the grain was at right angles to the rest of the bag, but that’s okay.
I hand basted the side pieces onto the bottom and then basted the side seam so I could consider both how to manage the shape of the bottom of the bag and how I want to finish the seams.
ETA: Still not looking for advice.

Finally starting a project I’ve had in mind for a while: making a bag out of a pair of cargo shorts that were past mending. It’s particularly focused on making use of the cargo pockets.
I’m planning it to be a knitting bag, so no Velcro or zippers.
(I have specific plans; no advice please. Though if you’ve made a similar bag, I’d love to hear about it.)
