Changed the (manual, M32) transmission fluid on the #Astra today. #Opel claims it's a "lifetime of the car" filling, but most mechanics dispute this claim.
I'd say they're right to. This is after 11 years and 150'000 km and it doesn't look so good anymore.
Fixed some previous mechanic's crimes with the engine floor cover (it must've dragged on the road before and a corner was gone), cleaned up a bit and applied a wax coating while I was under there.

#Car shifting lever was having difficulty returning to center when warmed up (not a gearbox problem, luckily), so after much research I did this procedure:
Slightly scary removing the ECU, but all went well. Lubricated the cables, joints, lever and return spring and fixed a loose hydraulic hose while in there.
Tomorrow we'll drive to town and find out if it's sorted now.

Car suddenly smell funny? Doesn't always have to be the engine!
Discovered this by accident: One of the nubbins that are supposed to hold the engine cover (and always falls out) had landed on the exhaust manifold, unnoticed. This is the hottest part of an engine. Each time the engine warmed up, it melted a little and smelled bad.
It was stuck fast and only came off when the engine was hot enough again to soften it.

With two aging cars to take care of (ours and Schwiemu's), I'm becoming more of a car mechanic/electronics person than I ever planned to.
Latest problem: a recurring DPF issue on the Škoda. Narrowed it down to the differential pressure sensor. Cleaned it and the hose from the DPF. Passed a test drive, but we'll see if that was enough. Replacing the sensor is easy, but requires car specific software to calibrate. Even Ali clones of this are expensive 💰😕
No sparks implies a need for one of these.
