Remembering Harold Arnold (Herk) Harvey (1924-96), the American film / theatre director, actor, producer and screenwriter, born in Colorado #OnThisDay. He made industrial / educational films for over 30 years but is best known for his only feature, the distinctive, eerie, latterly admired Ambrose Bierce / Bergman-inspired chiller #CarnivalOfSouls (1962), in which he also portrays the ominous "The Man" seemingly haunting motorist Candace Hilligoss.

He's much better known – albeit mostly uncredited – for his short PSAs including Halloween Safety, ruining your kids' favourite holiday since 1977, and Shake Hands With Danger (1980). You don't have to tell Three Finger Joe about taking no risks.

I would definitely encourage anyone who hasn't seen #CarnivalOfSouls to seek it out. You can almost certainly find it on #YouTube or any other free streaming service.

@RickiTarr One of my favorite horror movies! So creepy on such a small budget, and amazingly progressive considering the time it was made. Really wish that both Herk Harvey and Candace Hilligoss did more horror movies!

Carnival of Souls is a great early example of independent horror filmmaking and is a lot better than you might expect. Spooky, atmospheric, beautiful. Sometimes clumsy.
