I'm glad they're studying this, but this is the 2nd or 3rd study like this I've seen & none of them are trying Ceratonia siliqua. One of the illustrations even says 'Desert Museum' Palo Verde doesn't supply much shade - correct! Know what does, is thrifty, and can take high temps? !

Too bad I didn't get that NSF GRFP funding. Too bad it's hard to come into grad school with a grant so you can pre-load your study topic. Because they all ignore carob

Mostly through ignorance of the virtues and needs of this particular species, Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) went from being a recommended landscape tree in much of CA in the first half of the 20th c. to being dis-recommended. Here's why: look at that sopping wet muddy soil in high summer. THAT is what's wrong. The tree was surrounded by lawn, which is the poor environmental decision. The overwatering causes problems with many drought-resistant species.

As most of the carobs I've studied were street trees, they had their lower branches trimmed so I never got a good luck at the whole flowering/fruiting process through the year on one tree.

This is the first time I've gotten photos this close to ripening. I've only had all green, very slightly brown, or all brown before this.

Remember the story about Universal cutting the shit out of Ficus microcarpa trees because they wanted picketers to have less shade? It's actually ridiculously common for rich/powerful ppl to cut down trees that aren't theirs.

I recently had to take a trip to LA so I went by a space where that happened early in my study of carob street trees. The plot is still undeveloped. They cut down a tree they didn't own & haven't even built housing.

In Davis booze news, Davis Food Co-op does not carry the regular Don Q rum I used to make carob-infused rum. However, it does carry the Don Q 151 (proof) rum and it's discounted by about $2 right now to $22.99.

The pods on this carob are starting to color up. Notice on some of them that it does it around where the seeds are, which make the pods look dimpled.

I'm usually very shy about contacting people I don't know, esp if I'm asking for the favor of information. I'm glad I overcame that this morning, because I read about a collection that may help me in carob research. I decided I had nothing to lose so I wrote. Got an immediate response.

One of the carobs growing here in Davis. Not all of their fruits escape critters so I'm hopeful for this one.

It's hard to take Food and Wine seriously when whoever's editing their video content doesn't know what carob fruit looks like.

The emulsifier made from carob seeds has been called a lot of things: carob bean gum, locust bean gum (LGB), tragasol...but for the first time I've seen someone call it "carob pectin", which is a pretty bad misnomer.

I try to keep researching carob in my "spare time". Just got an email full of the kind of marketing hype that damaged carob's rep in the first place.

"The world's first company to sell cocoa-free chocolate"

No. Nope. Not even a little were you the first.

Furthermore, if it doesn't have cocoa in it, it's not chocolate (and that goes for "white chocolate" too).

I'd read references to a carob tree being planted in people's names in Palestine, but I didn't know until today that the trees lining the Avenue of the Righteous Gentiles are carobs. yadvashem.org/yv/en/exhibition

Wish I'd gotten moving sooner this morning. I just didn't feel like going outside just yet. I didn't get out until 11:15am. Since weather is still on the cool-for-Davis side here, I wanted to get some of these carob seedlings transplanted. I only got through 4 of them so far. Partially because I'm overheated and if that hadn't stopped me, the lack of tall pots would have.

Carobs are drought-tolerant and send out long taproots.
