Quick drive down to Carson Valley and spotted a few hawks on fence posts. After posting these on Bluesky, was informed they are both Red-tailed Hawks.

Woke up later than intended and the snow was already falling. Turned out to be a lucky day anyway, spotted four mature bald eagles. Two on fenceposts in a pasture and two in a tall tree.

Finally spotted some bald eagles close enough to get decent pictures of them. The mature eagle was in Washoe Valley while the immature one was in Carson Valley.

No sun for us. The Carson Valley has had an inversion layer sitting over us all day. The moisture from the snow is rising, but trapped by the inversion layer; we end up with clouds. Normally this view would be of the mountains (looking at Tahoe), but instead the dark blue is probably the inversion layer lifting, revealing the shadow of the mountain and the cloud layer to the left is illuminated by the setting sun.

The eastern Sierra Nevada range is covered with snow. This is seen from western Carson Valley, at the eastern base of Lake Tahoe.

I'm starting to recognize when red-tailed hawk are getting ready to take off. I was focused in on this one when standing on the post, waiting. Managed to catch the take off, but the focus isn't the best. Need more practice to get the best action shots I can.

Visited Carson Valley today after the big snow storm. Spotted a massive flock of Western Meadowlarks. Also saw numerous hawks, primarily red-tailed. Swung by two duck ponds, one of which had a cute bufflehead pair. Sunlight revealed a California scrub jay nestled among the branches.
