I am a devotee of Santa Muerte. She is not for everyone, and that's OK. I personally do not associate her with the Christian or Catholic god although that is one way she has gained the most followers, she is believed to be part of an older family from south american civilization such as the Inca and the Maya, and so her connections are grounded within those worlds.
