Today's animal from Glasgow's architecture is this rather cute little monkey above the entrance to the old Randolph Buildings of Glasgow University.

I pass the Sandyford Henderson Memorial Church in the west end of Glasgow several times a day. This afternoon was the first time I'd ever noticed this bat in its stonework!

It just goes to show that no matter how famiiar you are with Glasgow and its buildings, there's always new things to discover.

Three of the Nations at Glasgow University represent areas of Scotland where students came from. These are Glottiana (or Clydeside), Transforthana (or Lothian) and Rothesay. Students from all other places were lumped together in a fourth Nation called Loudoniana.

Symbols of the Four Nations over a door of the John McIntyre Building, University of Glasgow.

You'll see these symbols on various locations around the Glasgow University campus (including on the main gates).

They are the symbols of the four Nations of the University, a tradition in Scotland's three oldest universities that is not found at newer ones, like Edinbugh University.

The Woodlands Cats, Woodlands, Glasgow.

I love these cats. There is absolutely no reason for them to be there, yet there they are, a pair of cats, each sitting proudly on its own ledge on opposite side of a circular second story window above the entrance to the Annan Gallery on Woodlands Road in the west end of Glasgow.

Another of the ornate and individually unique column capitals, this time featuring a cute little owl rather than a human face, from Doune Gardens in the west end of Glasgow.

A selection of the wonderfully ornate column capitals around the entrances to the tenements on Doune Terrace in the west end of Glasgow.

Now, is it just me, or does that one in the bottom right hand corner bear an uncanny resemblance to a certain Charles Rennie MacKintosh?

This symbol, shown here above the door of 2 Clarendon Place, is one which appears on quite a few Glasgow buildings.

It's called a Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty, and it's a very ancient symbol dating back to Ancient Greece. It consists of a goat's horn overflowing with fruits, nuta or flowers. It is generally used to represent affluence or abundance.

Stonework detail on the former Commercial Bank Building, 6 Gordon Street, Glasgow.

Built in the 1850s in a Palazzo style from a design by David Rhind of Edinburgh, this building is easily over-looked, especially when compared to the many more ornate Glasgow buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, but it features some magnificent stonework.
