In a new Temblor blog post, University of Texas Institute for Geophysics postdoctoral scholar Alice Turner details the various seismic risks Portland, Oregon faces from local faults and the offshore Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Looking up resources for emergency kits online (, , etc. etc.), and I keep accidentally opening preppers' sites. This is totally going to mess up how The Algorithms deal with me, isn't it?

Via the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington: "Tabloid news sites have recently been circulating information about this discovery [of Pythia's Oasis off the coast of Oregon] and claiming it is a harbinger of a large megathrust earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. This idea misrepresents what we actually learn from observations of Pythia’s Oasis and creates a false sense of alarm."

“Thunderbird and Whale had a terrible fight, making the mountains shake and uprooting the trees, said the Quileute and the Hoh people; they said the ocean rose up and covered the whole land.”

The more successful real-life tests of ShakeAlert in CA means that when we get a big quake in WA, many of us will get some advance warning via phone alerts.

This is very important for the next M9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone quake, where the I-5 corridor may get up to 1 min before destructive shaking originating offshore reaches places like Seattle.

Something I wrote in 2019 about ShakeAlert:

“The last large quake on the Cascadia fault occurred on Jan. 26, 1700, scientists say…geologic evidence from the past 10,000 years indicates that massive quakes with a magnitude of around 9.0 happen on the fault on an average of every 430 years. When including smaller but still powerful quakes on portions of the fault, the timeline in some areas shrinks to every 250 years…It has been 322 years.” nytimes.com/2022/02/07/us/tsun

Getting better.

All tsunami-alerting quakes should now get cross-posted. Most locals get the local hashtag, non-locals get the hashtag.

California events are trickier. They come in three flavors in the source data, and just one without a comma.

I like my current code, as ", [state]" data can be parsed out without the extra hoops, e.g. I could do a Hawaii bot in moments. But some "x km from y" alerts get second-class treatment. Boo!
