One of my favourites whenever I visit the gallery, tho it was years before I truly noticed the man in the snow who had cast away one of his crutches 😉 I always thought it seemed Christmassy…tho I imagine the story behind it is quite different to what I thought. Still, I am mesmerised by it

One tumultuous night in my youth I was unable to make it home. So I set off with my sleeping bag into a national park and slept by the sea. In the morning I woke to the most dazzling landscape that just swallowed and obliterated me as I waded naked into the ocean for a cold swim. It was an extraordinary experience that has left me annoyed when people use beauty as an anodyne replacement for "pretty".
Years later a friend told me there was a word for that experience, the way the Romantics used the word sublime.

‘Winter Landscape with a Church’

Look carefully and you will see a man resting against a rock, before him what appears to be a pair of walking crutches are lying abandoned in the snow. In the background a gothic church is submerged in fog.
This is typical of Friedrich, whose works tended to express his emotional, subjective response to nature and the feelings of alienation and isolation within it.

It seems to me that a large % of all contemporary #ScienceFiction #art is basically riffing on the 1818 #Romantic era #painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" by #CasparDavidFriedrich.
This might be even more true for the #AIgenerated art we see everywhere these days.
So many pieces have some character, usually very small, facing away from the viewer and towards some vast scene evoking the sublime, greater mysteries, and potential beyond the typical.
I don't find this at all surprising.

Thinking back to this mountain hike with my dad. He took me up for the first time last year. He regularly went up it in his late 20s, and we signed into the same guestbook in the Hütte that my grandfather was often logged in, back in the 1950s. Nice legacy, beautiful mountain
