#GreatAlbums1990s - #CassandraWilson – #NewMoonDaughter (1996). Wilson was a sort of flipside to Erykah Badu, bringing pop inflections to her jazz instead of the other way round. Wilson’s reading of “Strange Fruit” establishes a traditional benchmark, before the set surprises with renditions of U2, Hank Williams and Neil Young – all of which work thanks to Wilson’s wry delivery and a large crew of session pros able to meld blues, jazz and pop.

BREAKING NEWS: I just discovered a #CassandraWilson cover of the song (plus another by #TheOriginals, who I've never heard before but are apparently a #Motown #band).
In the CW cover, the first-person POV is no longer the title character's: "I met a lineman for the county, and he drives the main road"
The bridge makes him the beloved rather than the lover:
"And I need him more than want him, and I want him for all time, but my Wichita lineman is still on the line."
