Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez has been much criticised for his concessions to Catalan separatists. What his critics (including me in the past) often fail to realise is that the concessions are part of a wider system. In during 2017-2019 the Spanish police routinely infiltrated peaceful demonstrations to incite violence, so as to justify police violence against demonstrators. The secret police was caught on tape, repeatedly; the videos are all over the web, a well documented and recurrent event, and there were no consequences for anybody on the executive or legislative branches. The Spanish government simply pretends it didn't happen and is getting away with it.

I am not able to understand how can any "consolidated democracy" (as per the Financial Times table and nomenclature) retain or merit such a title with these sort of iron fist tactics over its very own citizens. The European Union's treaty, Article 7, says that any state that applies violence against its own citizens will be expelled from the Union, and yet this didn't happen either. In light of these events it's hard not to entertain the idea that the whole political system is a kind of farce.

Carles Puigdemont, the Catalan exile who holds the key to the Spanish government.

Prosecuted for declaring Catalonia's independence in 2017, the Brussels-based MEP controls the fate of Socialist Pedro Sánchez, who hopes to form a new government. Puigdemont has already set out the conditions for his highly unlikely support.

At last, it's publication day for the 'Minoritised Languages and Travel' special collection in the Modern Languages Open journal edited with an intro by yours truly -- and all available Open Access.

Allow me to share each paper in this thread as they get published one by one.

First up,
“Everything Remains the Same”: Julio Camba Travelling Spain
by David Miranda-Barreiro

Abstract
In the first decades of the twentieth century, the Madrid-based Galician journalist Julio Camba (1882–1962) acquired long-lasting fame as a travel writer thanks to his foreign chronicles published in the Spanish press and subsequently compiled in a series of volumes. [...] Drawing on studies on state nationalism (Billig 1995) and Spanish nationalism (Taibo 2014, Delgado 2014) this article examines not only Camba’s own views but the response from contemporary scholarship to his texts.
