Salisbury Cathedral is stunning. I found your man Aziraphale in the medieval frieze in the chapter house (as well as Jacob “wrestling” an Angel). And isn’t that font just stunning? It’s this kind of shit that saw me doing a masters in medieval studies back in the day.
And, thanks to our Russian friends, we all know that the spire is 123m tall.

I've struggled with Mastodon but have decided to publish a bit more to see if I can pick up some like-minded followers. I'm abandoning Twitter/X for the day. Anyway, here's a photo from my day out in Winchester yesterday

Lincoln Cathedral.

I am fascinated by churches, cathedrals, temples and mosques, which is odd given that I am an atheist. Perhaps it's the deep devotion manifested in their extraordinary architecture that stirs something in me. I feel a similar spiritual connection when in nature; that is where I find my faith.

The scissor arches under the tower of Wells Cathedral, inserted to support the tower after cracks had started to appear between 1338 and 1348 by master mason William Joy, to brace the piers.

Had a very enjoyable afternoon in the garden of the Bishop's Palace in Exeter today. Even met the Bishop!

St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen. The tomb of Patrick Scougall, Bishop of Aberdeen, died 1682: King Death reunites Scougall with his wife. Death looks rather like a bad stage magician revealing the outcome of his trick.

St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen. Sanctuary cross in the south nave, cross head 10th century, cross shaft modern. Within the area marked by the crosses, fugitives could have forty days sanctuary and protection. It is thought this cross stood outside the cathedral's main gate.

In St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen, is this Pictish cross stone, probably associated with the first church founded on the site in c.580 CE. It was discovered in a stone dyke at Hillhead of Seaton in 1932.

Norwich Cathedral from the cloisters, and the labyrinth in the cloister garth. From one of the rooms above the cloister walks, a chorister was practising, and his beautiful voice rolled over us as we walked the labyrinth to the centre and back, a journey out of the present world and back again. A pilgrimage with a wonderful soundtrack!
