Catherine Wheel - Chrome

A tiny notch below Ferment in my opinion, but a great album - harder hitting than the previous, likely due to Gil Norton's production (he's no Tim Friese-Green).

This got lumped in with 'shoegaze'. It was a blanket term for distorted-guitars-plus-slightly-buried-vocal-melody, but also just a way to slag off things they decided they didn't like. Dickinson doesn't care; he restores Porsches.

Whatever. Great. Finally re-released.

- – (1992). With a sound combining shoegaze haziness and harder rock drive, CW ran a middle track between shoegaze and the Britpop that would soon take over. Rob Dickinson and Brian Futter couldn’t conceal a basic pop sensibility on tracks like “Texture,” “I Want to Touch You” and the glistening hit “Black Metallic.” The group’s dark romantic gloom still feels hypnotic played loud at dusk.
