Back in 2015, #CathyONeil published an excellent critique of litigation finance in the context of vaginal mesh cases:

O'Neill's point is that *incentives matter*. The incentive for a litigation finance fund is to extract settlements, not win justice. Time and again, we've seen how a financial tactic can be severed from a societal strategy - like how GDP can be goosed to spectacular heights without improving national prosperity.

Fascinating article about Cathy O'Neil's new book, The Shame Machine: Who Profits in the New Age of Humiliation. It explores how algorithms rely on shame. #algorithms #shame #CathyONeil #TheShameMachine https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/06/29/1053985/society-shame-book-review/?utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=site_visitor.unpaid.engagement&utm_medium=tr_social&fbclid=IwAR1oyStwVC2_7qUB0c8ZovgFzJe_6H5GeTPNSUHBiBzBilqr7YKz8DyKxrg

I listened to #CathyONeil 's #WeaponsofMathDestruction
I found O'Neil's title of the faceless #math models and algorithms affecting the lives of people as "WMDs" to be funny but fitting. Her bias is reflected but enlightening.
While I like the idea of the data scientist Hippocratic oath, I would be more excited to see algorithmic audits. I also think adding a human into AI loops could also help restore some sanity to these math models running a-muck. mathbabe.org

I just finished reading Weapons of Math Destruction #CathyOneil, an excellent book. Any suggestions for Ethics/Technology books?
