Another #battery innovation presented by #CATL.

New electrolyte materials could sharply improve the charging efficiency of current lithium-ion batteries. CATL would be able to mass produce a battery capable of delivering 400 km of driving with a 10-min charge this year. The new electrolyte could deliver a 43% increase in efficiency in cold temperatures.

Toyota, Tesla, BYD and battery scientists and mineral analysts in general are aiming for a moving target.

First this is not about competition only. CATL is Teslas biggest battery supplier. BYD is Teslas newest battery supplier. Tesla expansion is for now bound to dependency. The failure to scale 4680 battery packs has made these dependencies stronger.

Instead of a Tesla battery factory in Berlin there is the import of Byd batteries.

4680 production is going slow in Texas, CATL is now selling their own 4680 version Qilin to chinese companies Geely and Chery.

Explaining the bad parts of battery production is good. Still it is usual to forget to mention the problem of fossil fuel production harming people and devastating nature. And the articles rarely explain how the problems with mining goes far beyond minerals to batteries.

Lastly any article on #cobalt in #ev have to tell the story of cobalt free batteries as #byd and #catl LFP batteries. These batteries are already dominating the Chinese market.
