As an Iowan, I have mixed feelings about the state's loss of the first presidential #caucus status. The state Democrats really shit the bed in 2020. But the state is also looking more like Kansas or Nebraska politically - deep red instead of middle of the aisle. Even though #Iowa is more diverse than ever, it's still 90+% old and white. Not how the country looks anymore. A diverse country needs diverse voices setting the tone for its leaders.

Many good points, one I'll highlight especially: In a small market like ours, true grassroots is rewarded over multi-million-dollar ad blitzes. Keeping that dynamic (in whatever state) would be good.

Tatsächlich hatten Milley und der #Caucus jedoch recht - wie die Tarnmanöver der Regierung zeigen.

Trotz öffentlicher Ablehnungen hat das Weiße Haus die Tür für Verhandlungen zögerlich geöffnet. Wie der Journalist Aaron Maté sorgfältig dargelegt hat, hat die Regierung eine Reihe von Indiskretionen inszeniert: dass die Gespräche mit den Russen über den Einsatz von #Atomwaffen "die Temperatur gesenkt" hätten, dass das Weiße Haus die ukrainische Führung ermutige, "Offenheit" für Verhandlungen zu signalisieren, dass #Sullivan vertrauliche Gespräche mit Putins Adjutanten über die Ukraine geführt habe und dass er während seines Aufenthalts in Kiew "ausgelotet" habe, "wie der Konflikt beendet werden kann und ob es eine diplomatische Lösung geben könnte".

Die Regierung bewegt sich auf einem schmalen Grat, denn sie will den ukrainischen Widerstand, die Einheit der Verbündeten und die Unterstützung im eigenen Land nicht untergraben. Die Interessen des Westens unterscheiden sich jedoch eindeutig von denen der Ukrainer. Auf dem Schlachtfeld wurde die Einheit der NATO um Grenzen herum geschmiedet: keine Truppen vor Ort zu stationieren und Vorsicht walten zu lassen, welche Waffen in die Ukraine gehen. Bei den Verhandlungen gehen die Interessen ebenfalls auseinander. Angesichts des horrenden Schadens, der seinem Land zugefügt wurde, wird #Selensky Kompromisse mit den Russen als abstoßend empfinden und Gebietsabtretungen - selbst die Rückkehr zum vorherigen Status quo - nur schwer schlucken können. Seine beste Chance wäre es, die Vereinigten Staaten und die NATO als aktive Kombattanten in den Krieg zu ziehen, aber keiner von beiden will sich darauf einlassen.

Angesichts der geschätzten Kosten für den Wiederaufbau der Ukraine in Höhe von 1 Billion Dollar ist die Notwendigkeit, den Krieg zu beenden, offensichtlich, und es werden immer mehr Stimmen laut, die vorsichtig auf eine diplomatische Lösung drängen. In einer kürzlich erschienenen Kolumne räumen der ehemalige UN-Botschafter Tom Pickering und George Beebe, Direktor für große Strategie am Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft (er war auch Sonderberater für Russland des ehemaligen Vizepräsidenten Dick Cheney), die scheinbar unüberwindbaren Hindernisse ein, argumentieren aber gleichzeitig, dass die #Diplomatie der einzige Weg ist, den Krieg zu beenden. Denjenigen, die behaupten, dass die Zeit nicht reif ist, entgegnen sie, dass Diplomatie Zeit braucht und die Vorbereitungen jetzt beginnen sollten. Denjenigen, die argumentieren, dass die Grenzfragen unlösbar sind, schlagen sie vor, dass die Diplomatie mit weniger kniffligen Fragen beginnen könnte: Wege, um die Zahl der zivilen Opfer zu verringern, gegenseitiges #Vertrauen aufzubauen und die Grundlage für einen eventuellen #Waffenstillstand zu schaffen.
