IN SUMMARY
- #Cauris spread was likely exacerbated by COVID-19-related strain on health care and public health systems - i.e., staff and equipment shortages, increased patient burden and disease severity, increased antimicrobial use, changes in patient movement patterns, and poor implementation of nonβCOVID-19 prevention/control measures.
- Containment is possible - desperately need investment in public health especially with competing infectious diseases threats!
C. auris is making news again (and rightly so). #Cauris is spreading rapidly in long-term acute care hospitals in the US.
We must not be complacent in Canada.

#Cauris can infect the heart, brain, blood. It is associated with a 30-60% case fatality rate. This pathogen is resilient in its environment and can withstand many disinfectants. Halting outbreaks has meant closure of some facilities to be sterilized.
And yet - fungal pathogens get less than 1.5% of all infectious diseases funding. There is an urgent need for investment in surveillance and reporting, as well as investment in diagnostics and therapeutics.

WHO has a list of fungal pathogens posing serious threats to human health - Candida auris (#Cauris) is in the critical (highest) priority category. #Cauris was first identified in 2009 in Japan. The US has had over 5,000 cases in hospitals & nursing homes.
