It interests me that the ‘vertigo’ (#McDowell) and ‘terror’ (#Cavell) that an understanding of the PLA in later #Wittgenstein tends to induce has no obvious counterpart in #Hume’s seeming #scepticism with respect to the ‘#understanding’. Hume didn’t engender that vertigo (perhaps in Kant?) despite the extremes to which his ‘sceptical’ challenge pushed us. Hume’s was a concrete piece of faculty #psychology. Witters denied us the option of snubbing that vison of the #human #mind.

On #worldphilosophyday, I am thinking about an unquotably long passage in #cavell 's Conditions Handsome and Unhandsome, when he underscores something I have never felt that I have fully understood, and then calls it "not a particular moral demand, but the condition of democratic morality."

Time for an #introduction – I've been occupied setting up https://zirk.us for #arts and #humanities people last week!

I'm a PhD student in #literature and #philosophy at the FU Berlin, writing on the status of "ethical" literary criticism after poststructuralism. I argue that Stanley #Cavell and New #Wittgenstein philosophers offer a better alternative than "neo-humanist" and "deconstructive" approaches.

When I'm done I hope to dedicate more time to creative #writing activities.
