The link is the most recent information I could find on the ongoing cave rescue operation in Turkey. On Sept 2 a member of an international research expedition had a serious medical incident involving gastrointestinal bleeding in Morca Cave, the third deepest cave in Turkey. He is currently receiving medical treatment in the cave, and rescuers are hopeful that within a few days he will have recovered enough to begin the long ascent out of the cave.

This month iNaturalist was going to feature me for Pride, but since behind their rainbow washing they treated myself & nb&trans naturalists so terribly, i revoked my consent.

Its not been easy. What happened on iNat was a sliver of the world. Respecting pronouns is only the tip of the iceberg, underneath it is everything from legislating away our rights to murder. Words matter because they become actions. But, Im here, queer, and living my life :)

Sometimes I get asked how young is too young to cave. I don’t think there is an answer.

There are caves safe for all to explore, even if your kid is little and needs carried some, or maybe your teenager doesn’t listen the best right now but there are empty passages without delicate things that could be broken which they can enjoy without harm.

I’ve meet adults I don’t think should be caving because they are careless: for themselves and the environment. I’ve met children who can cave better than I. I’ve been in caves that can handle large groups and caves that I will never return because I feel they are too delicate for even experienced cavers to take a second trip; we got to see it, enjoy the memory.

The key is simply to be thoughtful for the group and the cave, to cave safely for both people and these delicate environments.

Having done it once, you are visiting the Earth's secret places. Once you go through an area that is *hard* it's like you're backstage somehow, seeing a part of the world that you weren't invited to see.

Plus the whole weird-stuff-to-see thing. I blame reading #AlanGarner's Weirdstone when I was twelve.

I just spend a few hours this weekend in the back yard on a rope practicing changeovers.
After reading a number of #NSS caving accident reports I realized that it's a skill more vertical cavers need to have as second nature. Even if they are just "bouncing" a pit.

I'm using a frog system.
I was using a micro rack for the first time. I love it. While my large rack works fine it's a bit overkill for mid-western caves.

We had time last week on NHM-London’s SEM! So we decided to look more closely at a cave pseudoscorpion we found as a part of our Matienzo Karst Entomology Project.
