Odd how the Sahara divides Africa conceptually. I have today heard a professor in a podcast state that early Muslims conquered Africa, and also a #CBCIdeas episode discussing hair which implies that the residents of all of pre-colonial Africa have Black hair.

Listening to a #CBCIdeas episode about #FirstNations matters, the main interlocutor discusses the issue of #sovereignty ; but what he means by "sovereignty" is very different from how I understand it.

To me, it's a question of being a #Westphalian state, capable of signing treaties, declaring war, the ultimate source of law for its subjects; to him, it's about indigenous people having control over indigenous affairs, like the #Sami having their own legislature.

Listening to #CBCIdeas ... It's all very well to go through the history of #uspol interfering in foreign governments, but it's foolish to ignore the degree to which this was a matter of competition with other great powers. If the US had returned to #isolationism in 1946, would the world have been better off?

Sure, the US worked hard to make support the Christian Democrats in the 1948 Italian election; but the Soviets had their agents in Italy as well.
