St Brown (prof, UOttawa) has analyzed Canadian foreign aid to #Mongolia
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10.1080/02255189.2023.2184330
Thru his careful analysis, Brown concludes that, "failed partnership with π²π³ highlights disappointments that can arise when donors place own priorities over needs of poor people in developing countries & dilute poverty-fighting missions w/ commercial self-interest."

Strong op-ed by @philliplipscy on eve of PM Kishida visit to Canada. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-japan-and-canada-must-commit-to-an-ambitious-upgrade-of-their/
Note that Y Tiberghien and I made virtually the same main point (Canada-Japan=obvious intl rel pairing, should do more together) in the Globe and Mail in 2005 ahead of PM Martin visit to Japan (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/shall-we-dance/article20418815/).
17 years, similar comment. That says a lot about Canada-Japan relationship...
My #UBC colleague P Evans reviews Canada's new #IndoPacific strategy for ANU's East Asia Forum.
"Considering modest budget commitment, 5-year time frame and number of activities to be supported, impact in the region is likely to be far from transformational. But combined w/ diplomatic and defence resources already in play in region, the strategy does signal the sincerity of commitment & a long-term investment in knowledge & networks for a sustained presence."
Not terribly surprised that Canadian Indo-Pacific Strategy fails to mention #Mongolia explicitly.
Themes like promotion of peace, expanding trade, people connections, green future and Canadian engagement with obvious significance for π¨π¦-π²π³ relations (50th anniversary of dipl relations in 2023), but will have to make connections myself.

According to Globe & Mail PM Trudeau announced,
"That includes $92.5-million to create about 60 new jobs, both at Canadaβs missions in the [Indo Pacific] region and within Global Affairs Canada."

60 new jobs for region = one extra diplomat to π¨π¦ embassy to #Mongolia?
