The Mi'kmaq, a First Nations people of the Nova Scotia had a field stick-and-ball game known as Tooadijik, and also Oochamkunutk which was their own stick and ball game played on the ice.

The modern-day ice hockey originated in Nova Scotia. While the first ever recorded modern-day ice hockey game was supposedly played in Montreal in 1875, the world's oldest hockey stick, the "Moffett Stick", was made in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, dated sometime in the mid-30s or 4 decades before the Montreal game.
