@linuxgal I remember using #cdparanoia for this back in the day; particularly good for scratchy/damaged CDs.
If cdparanoia cannot rip track one on a CD and your drive is just making noise, spinning the disc up and down, it may be caused by some sort of physical copy protection. Try setting the reading speed to 1x:
cdparanoia -S 1 1 <output file>
Although I had lots of SCSI/ATAPI error reports from cdparanoia and it took some time to read a 4 minute track, it worked fine. No errors in the resulting wav file 🙂
