"Ceaușescu's regime was known for some extremely restrictive policies on abortion; prior to his taking power, Romania had three to four abortions per live birth. Ceaușescu put the kibosh on this recklessness, banning abortion entirely, advocating vigorously for Catholic-sized families and imposing an almost self-parodically stupid enforcement regime whereby women in the workplace were regularly rounded up and given pregnancy tests by government agents referred to (behind their backs) as the 'menstrual police'. "Scornicesti (se pronuncia Scornitshesht) es una pequeña villa de 12 mil habitantes ubicada en el condado de Olt, al sur de Rumania. En 1918, en una humilde casa de campesinos de esa localidad, nació Nicolae Ceaucescu y en ella vivió hasta que se fue a Bucarest para trabajar de aprendiz de zapatero. Por la influencia de su mentor, un comunista llamado Alexandru Sandrulescu, se metió en política y de a poco logró hacerse con la secretaría general del Partido Comunista y, consecuentemente, con el puesto de Conducator en 1965.

Una vez en el poder quiso convertir a su modesta ciudad natal en una ciudad modelo comunista. En pocos años derribó todos los edificios tradicionales de la villa y construyó en su lugar otros de inspiración socialista urbanizando el resultado con amplias avenidas. Además construyó la autopista A1, que conducía a Scornicesti, fue la única que tuvo el país durante años."

Now that #Lukashenko has had his #Ceaucescu moment when visiting a factory of state-owned truck builder #MZKT and getting a more than unfriendly reaction from the workforce that was not half as loyal as he had expected, it's time for this #authoritarian old man to leave #Belarus and give the country a chance to find a new government.
