It can be a bit disappointing when the mutant is just like the wild-type, but one can look at the bright side, it's just as beautiful as the wild-type.

I teach a lab course on looking at asymmetric cell division and embryo development in the par mutants. It's pretty low tech, with cheap dissecting scopes and microscopes, and it works pretty well. Anyway students realized years ago that one can take pictures with a smartphone directly on the eyepiece. Now one student even made a time lapse movie of the first division and put it on youtube. Made my day.

You've heard of a lab-on-a-chip, now we've got a gym-on-a-chip or an "Acoustic Gym", as the University of Colorado researchers named it.

Understanding how exercise improves the neurogenic condition of Parkinson’s sufferers is complicated. So these scientists used some engineering to make it simpler, with genetically modified C. elegans and an incredibly tiny wave pool for swimming.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has long been a concern for the health and wellbeing of anyone who is indoors (which is many of us a lot of the time).

But there are ongoing efforts to detect pollutants indoors and many methods have been developed.

Now, Finnish researchers have used a transgenic GFP producing C. elegans to use their own chemical senses to detect harmful compounds.

Two new posts on preLights today! 👀

The other one has been written by Chee Kiang (Ethan) Ewe - postdoc in the – who highlights work from the .

This shows that the only constant is change – even in “hard-wired” C. elegans. The authors demonstrate the rewiring of an asymmetric neural circuit during associative learning.

We want to add some rab proteins and kinases to our target list for this year. If we can get some consensus targets (on wantlist of maybe 5+ research groups) that would be great. Feel free to post them here.

I've been an undergraduate lab course using ' early . It works pretty well, even a messy teacher like me can pull it off. It allows for students to experiment with both , and . For anyone interested on setting up a similar course here goes a short thread. The course is three 4h sessions in the span of a week. As material goes it requires dissecting scopes and basic light microscopes for all students 1/n

...once one ruled that out one can go for the "what do they do". But no, when you read reviews or you listen to keynote talks on the subject we'll find somewhere 'oh, btw, it would be nice to know the function of these thingies'. Guess what? There's evidence that if they have a function is not essential, e.g. embryos without - classic condensate! - are viable (see linked article from >10y ago). And that's not the only exemple, actually what is... 2/n
