The Celestron smartphone "adapter" (using that term very, very loosely here) has been procured. It's.... fine for what it is. For $20 "name brand" I'd expect it to be a little less painful to deal with, but at least it's made of metal unlike the Chinese knockoff versions.

Tested it against some branches in the middle distance since it's dark and rainy in CA still. It works, not perfectly, but it works. Better than hand-holding the phone to the eyepiece. When there is a clear night I'll experiment with what actually takes the best photo.

Also may have received some fancy new Z-Glass for the Nikon today. Which I'm super excited about using. Not a great shot, but comparison for the Nikon vs Telescope. In this setup... the Nikon windows.

My son got a telescope for Xmas. This photo doesn’t do it justice because I was trying to capture it with my phone through the eyepiece.

Still good fun though and the skies have been clear. It’s cool looking at Jupiter and seeing it’s moons.

What surprised me (it shouldn’t have, in hindsight) was you can see the planets moving across the field of view.

Excited to finally have had a clear night last night, some down time, and the renovations finished to test out the new garden observatory and get its first light! (garden lights on for display only)
Observatory not finished fully (pier needs further building in 2023 with the EQ mount and automation) and used old alt-az mount as I wanted to see what max RA/Dec I can get.
Tested my northern limits and was able to get Orion Nebula, Crab Nebula, Horsehead Nebula. Can easily spot Mars, Jupiter and Uranus too. So I can def. reach just a little north of the ecliptic. Grabbed M41 too. Next, need to test southern declinations, though I can very easily get the Fornax Cluster, Canopus and Archener. Hopefully both Magellanic Clouds too.
All images under 10 mins integration time, no darks, flats, biases.
Really happy with how beautiful, and functional, the backyard turned out and can’t wait to have lots of the telescope hardware automated to run remotely … but that’s next years job!

Old Microsoft Surface Laptop Gen. 1 is now a #Kubuntu 22.04 laptop. All of the Debian/Ubuntu astro tools installed. Charged the #celestron battery pack, unpacked the astro gear, set it all up, powered it all up. Run KStars & EKOS setup. Behold! EKOS finds everything & connects to it. Can see light when cameras are in Live View. Can move the mount around. Now to learn KStars & the planning tools to actually use all this gear next spring (or maybe this winter). #astrophotography

Question for #astrodon community. I’ve got an #asiairplus a #celestron c8 edge on an #AVX mount and a #zwo asi #224mc camera.

The focal length of the c8 means that the Asiair can’t #platesolve with the camera attached. What are my best options here?

A #guidescope - platesolve and goto with the camera attached to the guidescope then switch the camera to the c8 once in position

As above, but buy a separate camera for the guidescope and use that to platesolve and #guide

Nochmal die #Sonne in #H-alpha probiert und versucht, #Protuberanzen und Scheibe aus einer Aufnahme herauszuarbeiten. Das Potential scheint in den Daten drin zu sein. #QHY 163 Mono, #Baader SunDancer und #Celestron ED80/600.
Wenn nicht ständig ein Baustellenkran durch das Bild huschen würde, würde das auch mehr Spaß machen...
