This time she imagined a mother and her little girl seeing it together, and afterwards they take the bus home, and it’s raining, and they run home through the rain, “and I’d like to think they both run a little differently.”

Girlhood (2014) by Céline Sciamma is a gem of a film, if you liked Portrait of a Lady on Fire and haven't seen her other work. It's the third in a trilogy of unrelated coming-of-age dramas; the others (Water Lilies; Tomboy) are really good too.

A swimming pool is a perfect setting for a coming-of-age drama, Naissance des Pieuvres. For Marie, a flat chested 15 yr old, her object of desire is sultry Floriane, the school's synchro swim team captain who has reputation as a school slut. While her early-puberty-hit friend daydreaming about hunky François from the swim team, Marie hangs out at the synchro practice & practices her skills in the bathtub. Marie gets her ogling privileges at the practices in the swimming pool, in exchange for being a Floriane's wingman whenever she wants to hang with the boys. It turns out, Floriane's sluttiness is all but an act since no boys will dig her once they find out she's an inexperienced virgin. Céline Sciamma has a great visual sense and great empathy toward her characters to handle rather a pervy material. Never fully explicit, the girl's sexual escapades don't lose its grip on reality. Btw I totally understand eye-rolling at my lists of favourite #directors #authors and #films. They are favourites coming from a life of habits formed before actively trying to seek out more varied voices. I could have added #celinesciamma and #bongjoonho (e.g.), but others I enjoy - #kathrynbigelow, #karynkusama -haven’t made quite the same impact on me until recent years. And I am currently enjoying a book by #malloryomeara mentioned previously, but I need to greatly expand my reading list.
