Hi #ScienceMastodon! Check out the last Research Highlight from Issue 17 of JCS: Ke Hu and colleagues at Arizona State University mess with microtubule-associated proteins in Toxoplasma gondii to answer whether the distinct helical motility of this apicomplexan parasite arises from the spiral arrangement of its remarkably stable cortical microtubules.

'Using mammalian cells in culture, we discovered that they adapt to chronic mild stresses of up to two weeks, notably proteotoxic stresses such as heat, by increasing their size and translation, thereby scaling the amount of total protein.'

Hi #ScienceMastodon! Today's Research Highlight from JCS features work from Marijeta Kralj and colleagues at the Ruđer Bošković Institute and GENOS Glycoscience Research Laboratory in Croatia. In their paper, they explore why the drug salinomycin selectively targets cancer cells in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, a process associated with insidious cancer stem cells.

For the latest Research Highlight from JCS, we have a Short Report from Kenta Terai and colleagues at Kyoto University and the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan. Using a series of Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell lines with single and combined knockouts of the four ErbB receptors, the authors dissect roles of each receptor in complex epithelial cell behaviors. My Dresden colleagues have recently published a paper.
Carlotta Mayer (@c_ma_yer on the cross site) shows that #hepatocytes react to increased #bile #pressure by forming the #apical projections called bulkheads. This is also observed in #human #liver when bile pressure is increased to a pathological level. Upon further increase of bile pressure, bulkheads no longer hold the #canaliculi shape and form #rosettes.
