One thing I appreciate a lot in the #Fedora / #CentOS world: mock is kept up to date across supported releases, so you can easily do local builds for newer releases no matter what you use.
Meanwhile I'm trying to update an #Ubuntu #PPA and right now to do a `pbuilder` build for #mantic I have to be... on mantic itself.
Thank goodness for #distrobox !

#CentOS got the boot, thanks to some shenanigans from the RedHat business folks. They came up with #RockyLinux, which was supposed to carry on the CentOS legacy with the community's help. But honestly, it hasn't been smooth sailing, and we've lost some good stuff in the process. This sort of thing isn't unique – other distros have made iffy decisions that mess with our OS choices in these settings.

Even though you can look up #RHEL, #RockyLinux or #CentOS when you need #AlmaLinux help, you can get all the solutions you need just by searching "almalinux"

While backporting updates to supported packages during the LTS lifecycle is a big part of RHEL development, it is not the only thing RHEL Engineering does.
In this graph
https://tiny.distro.builders/view--view-eln.html
you can see the work on trimming dependencies of Fedora packages, which is happening now in Fedora ELN.
The goal is to reduce the number of SRPMs included in RHEL 10.
From 4700 packages in May we are now down to 2500.
And yes, all this development work is now open.
CentOS Stream 9 is now available for self-installs and new installs.

My new Minisforum UM790 Pro with the Ryzen 9 7940HS is really a fucking awesome beast! So much so that I'm seriously considering buying a second one to have equally potent machines for Linux AND Windows projects.
Guys, I can't emphasize it enough: great part, buy!!! 😎 😜 💰

:fedora: :centos: :redhat: In case you are asked to backport some upstream commit into an RPM package (as a patch) and don't know how to do it, here is my workflow.
@rysiek
Of RHEL-derivatives, only Rocky is probably a true rebuild now (like old CentOS was). AlmaLinux is merging fixes before RHEL, and advertises ABI compat, not bug compat, so there's probably no reason whatsoever to switch to AL if you don't use AL already. Oracle I'm not touching with my long metric pole. SUSE's response is a guess yet at this point, I haven't seen technical details.
@rysiek
Dust hasn't settled because we haven't seen what SUSE will do after their CEO's blogpost.
The problem with RHEL family is, people chose RH for stability, not for convenience (technically RHEL is a poor distro, it requires effort to glue packages together, which in Debian is already done by distro). That stability promise was violated twice (Stream 2,5 years ago and g.c.o now), so unless you need RHEL compat for some reason, I'd say you stick to Debian.

At @bitfolk we've got mirrors for:
- CentOS
- Debian
- Gentoo
- Ubuntu
- Slackware
Guess which one I find most difficult to maintain?
It's #CentOS. Every so often they just seem to decide to change everything or turn off rsync and I have to go grubbing for another mirror to use.
Was most recently using lon.mirror.rackspace.com. Their rsync has been down 2 days now.
As we wrap up, we want to do one more go around with shout-outs and highlights for our sponsors. Thank you again to Red Hat, @rockylinux, @centos, @almalinux, @opensuse, Meta, and Lenovo for helping us with Flock!

Fedora doesn't have a booth at #FrOSCon this year.
We will still have a swag to distribute, but you will have to find Fedora folks in the crowd to get it. Please don't hesitate to ask!
In the meantime I am deciding whether to wear #Fedora or #CentOS T-shirt this year.
I think I need a special edition T-shirt featuring both projects...
