Nothing shows more how #centralised the web has become than one of the major #cloud providers taking a big chunk of your favourite sites with it whenever it has a problem.

Remember when a big selling point of the internet was that a big chunk could be destroyed and most things would just keep running and the damage would be routed around?

I miss that #decentralised internet.

#Mastodon really reminds me of the early days of #netneutrality conversations where, if I recall correctly, internet providers were considering varying internet speeds in favour of the corporations and leaving individual websites with less. Before we know it, #Centralised #socialmedia snuck in, let centralised algorithm control what people see. #Opensource social media is bringing net neutrality back to the people.

“Post” looks like the Burger King that swipes into the place after McDonald’s moved out.

I don’t see a way how they can be different than Twitter, if their platform is centralised, inevitably ending up using the same ad-driven business model.

The way how you structure a platform like this from the start decides over your trajectory. It’s not something you can pivot later on.

With the rise of #Mastodon I've had this though in the back of my head for a week now.

Will there be a point in the future where the #EnvironmentalImpacts of multiple servers (#Instances) all duplicating data from each other, becomes an a consideration?

How large would it have to get that even at a small percentage of daily/monthly users, when compared to a centralised service (ie Twitter), we are matching the power consumption of a #centralised #datacenter ?

I'm not knocking what we have, I just want to know that smarter ppl than me are not creating new problems while solving existing problems.

I've to say I am really happy to see the big influx in the #fediverse - communication is so much better if it is not #centralised.

#CBDC could be #centralised, where transactions are recorded in ledgers managed by central banks that also provide user-facing services; or #decentralised, where a central bank sets rules for settlement of transactions that are then recorded by users or financial intermediaries⬇️
