Hatchling to adult in five months, the new 🐌 regime is working 😀! Almost an animal 'model'.

Happened upon a rare Cepaea on way home last night, missing the middle band ('12045') - last time I found on like this, it turned out to be a hybrid #cepaea #snails #hybrid #Speciation #speciationgenomics

First time I have spotted Cepaea hortensis on the University campus - and it's a beauty. Benefits of walking to work on a drizzly morning

SHOW2023 - short for Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Organisms Workshop - was hybrid last week @vuamsterdam (co-organised with @YumiNakadera) and contained great presentations, useful discussion sessions, a wonderful boat dinner (Smidtje), and a lovely, ethically produced 100% natural cotton bag for participants. Next year: SHOW2024, Rennes (France) @steve_ramm

Dark lipped *Cepaea nemoralis (*on left) and pale-lipped Cepaea hortensis, yeah? No - both are *C. nemoralis*!
Lip colour and size is the conventional way to identify the two species, but it does not always work, especially in some regions (Cornwall, UK; Pyrenees, Spain), and depending upon age. There are also a lot of snails labelled "*C. hortensis*" on #iNaturalist that are more likely *C. nemoralis*. #snails #snail #cepaea

The snails are fed and seem to approve of today's dish: carrot peels with a mix of soaked lentils and a little bit of linseed.
It took just a few minutes for several snails to get attracted to their fresh meal.

My snail ID'ing skills coming to the fore on iNaturalist today - roadkill snail in New York, certainly introduced Cepaea, most likely C. nemoralis #iNaturalist #Cepaea #snail #roadkill

I am loving the profile shot @JEB. 😍 Paper that recently featured these snails 🐌 is here https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jeb.14060

Mid-November and there are still colour polymorphic Cepaea nemoralis (grove snail) out and active in the UK; worldwide #iNaturalist records by month on right.
#UoN #BBSRC PhD student Margarethe Johansen will present an update (based on whole genome linkage map) in our quest to identify the colour and banding loci, this Thursday at #MolluscanForum #NHMLondon. Free registration, hybrid event phyman@bas.ac.uk #Cepaea #grovesnail #Evolution #Polymorphism
