@deinol I'm wavering on my new rules. Cepheus has preposterously short training time, 1 week per total skill points to add +1 (but it has more skill points than CT, less than T5). I'm leaning towards N months per total skill points, N varies by EDU.

Last game was similar to yours, 1 skill per 2-4 years, and nobody liked that. Makes it hard to adapt the crew to new circumstances.

I’ve been recommending Cepheus Deluxe as a good starting place for those new to Traveller, but a discussion on Discord is making me re-think that. I still think it’s a good starter ruleset, and it’s good at walking someone through character creation. But it doesn’t teach a new GM what to do with the game.

I still the classic Traveller Adventure is a good primer to teach GMs what a free trader campaign looks like, even if it’s too railroaded in places.

It contains the #ElephantTrunk nebula, a long dense pocket of dust and gas just to the left of the bright blue star at its center. Our nights have been so cloudy that I got up at 3:30 this morning to capture two hours of exposures while the sky was finally clear. IC1396 could use a lot more exposure time to really bring out the colors. #StillLearning

Insufficient vocabulary is the bane of clear #ttRPG writing.

I’m looking over the space combat rules in #Cepheus Light Upgraded. The term “position” is used in two different senses (1. an abstract quality representing a ship’s locational advantage; 2. role as a ship’s crewmember) multiple times in close proximity.

I picked up Solis: People of the Sun from @dragoner

It’s way bigger than I expected. I’d really love a print on demand option.

It’s got star maps based on real star locations, similar to a project I once contemplated but never got very far on. I’m very impressed.

Thinking on it more, I feel much more confident about the future of the OGL. While in theory, Wizards still retains the right to try and mess with it in the future, by releasing their SRD Creative Commons they remove all incentive to do so. Anything they’d be trying to stop can switch to CC if necessary, and the stuff based on Traveller or older SRDs just don’t matter enough to them.

We still need a good alternative like ORC and more CC-BY gaming products.

Public Domain vs. Open License
The public domain is not viral. Just ask Disney, who mined the public domain and then copyrighted what they built from it.

The great strength of the #OGL 1.0a, and the #GPL, is *virality*.

You wanna use the blooderflies (published as blood moths by WW in their Creature Collection 2, my first pro D20 work) I made up? I can't stop you, neither can WW, or whoever might hold the copyright on the book nowadays. You can convert them to #FATE or #Pathfinder2e or #Cepheus, with no permission needed. And someone can take that conversion and use it in their book, because it's still open. And they can make 'Greater Blooderflies' and add 10 pages of blooderfly-related rules, and they will all be open for the NEXT creator to use. And so will their contributions.

Viral open licenses are BETTER than public domain. They say "If you plant a seed in the soil from these commons, you must return the fruit you grow."

@ChaskaTheMagicDog @danielmark_n_3d Same. Cepheus Engine's just a nice upgrade from Classic Trav, setting stripped out. The Hostile setting from Zozer Games is really nice, Alien-era space truckers & Soviet Space as enemies, but there's a bunch of others. And Sword of Cepheus for backwater sword & planet stories.

There's several cut-down versions like "Deluxe", but I prefer the first SRD/Moon Toad book.

Note, T5.09, the last version I have, is 759 pages, including 19 pages of index which very often points to wrong page numbers.

Cepheus Engine SRD is 172 pages, and just as detailed for things you use in actual play. Cepheus Light etc are 60 pages or less.

Hello, I'm Provinto. I play RPGs. I like to run #GURPS and at some point I'm going to run the #Cepheus Engine (maybe mashed up with #Traveller). I also appreciate the DIY RPGs of the OSR, especially GLOG and the Black Hack. I have a low-frequency blog. I also want to get into the D6 System or #OpenD6.
