To relate it to my recent couple of posts, this paper by the same folks is pretty amazing (if you like this sort of thing)

Wow, that's impressive: cerebellar cross-sections for 56 mammalian species, and data showing that "Ancestral estimations indicate that size and folding of the cerebrum and cerebellum increase and decrease concertedly through evolution."

"Diversity and evolution of cerebellar folding in mammals", by Heuer et al. 2023 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

Question: does the pachyderm's (elephant) cerebellum also follow the proportionality rule with the cerebrum? I recall a commentary (Herculano-Houzel doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2022.01. ) on how the elephant's cerebellum is 96% of all brain cells, when normally it's "only" 80%, at least in primates.

Processes in the are involved in various that affect motor learning. A new tool developed by a Bochum working group helps to investigate this better: a light-activated protein that is coupled with part of an exciting receptor.

First, by ‘current neural state’ I just mean r, the input set of firing rates to whatever store of synaptic weights we are assuming, W (I tend to assume this is the but that is not a critical assumption).

: I am a studying in freely moving humans (lots of 3D researchers study static humans or freely moving rats). I am excited by the (which is computionally huge but hard to study electrophysiologically), less so by the (which has been studied in immense detail but may, in the end, have a more minor computational role). I follow as and may solve the brain, en passant, before we do.

I’m a bit late to the game, but now out, in a more final form: nature.com/articles/s41586-022

Tri Nguyen, @lathomas42, and our team found neurons sample inputs redundantly and selectively in ways that may help make the network more robust with a minimal loss of encoding capacity.

@albertcardona Thank you for so kindly describing Tri Nguyen’s and @lathomas42’s paper. Indeed, Purkinje cells are amongst the most “elegant and luxurious” extracted out of our EM data.

One of the two first authors, Logan Thomas @lathomas42 is on mastodon, as is the senior author Wei Lee @darbly. Welcome! And what a spectacular paper on . Those must be the prettiest Purkinje cell renderings since the century-old famous ones from Cajal. This time with synapses though!

"Structured cerebellar connectivity supports resilient pattern separation" Nguyen, Thomas et al. in @darbly's lab nature.com/articles/s41586-022

Spectacular work based on connectomic reconstruction from nanometre-resolution volume electron microscopy and computational modelling that contributes novel findings in cerebellar microcircuitry:

"both the input and output layers of the circuit exhibit redundant and selective connectivity motifs, which contrast with prevailing models. Numerical simulations suggest that these redundant, non-random connectivity motifs increase the resilience to noise at a negligible cost to the overall encoding capacity. This work reveals how neuronal network structure can support a trade-off between encoding capacity and redundancy, unveiling principles of biological network architecture with implications for the design of artificial neural networks."
