As a technical matter, it's not that hard to modify Netflix's app so that every stream you pull seems to come from your house, no matter where you are. But doing so requires reverse-engineering Netflix's app, and that would violate #DMCA #Section1201, #CFAA, and eleventy-seven other horrible laws. As one of their efforts to prevent Morocco from extraditing Sebastien Raoult to the U.S. where he was indicted as an alleged member of ShinyHunters, Philippe Ohayon, Raoult's lawyer, also appealed to the U.N. Committee on Human Rights.

Yesterday, he received a response that said the committee was investigating the appeal and in the interim:

"En vertu de l'article 94 du règlement intérieur du Comité, il a également étédemandé à l'État partie de ne pas extrader l’auteur vers les États Unis tant que sa requêteest en cours d’examen par le Comité."

(translation): "Under article 94 of the rules of procedure of the Committee, it was also
requested the State party not to extradite the author to the United States while his request is under consideration by the Committee. This request does not imply that any decision has been taken on the substance of the issue in question."

So Morocco was asked NOT to extradite Raoult while the HR Committee considers the issues.

Sadly for Raoult and his family and friends, that request appears to have come too late. Raoult had already been extradited to the U.S. on January 25.

A federal magistrate judge recommended dismissing #hacking charges against Vikas Singla. Singla was indicted in 2021 and charged with 18 counts of violating #CFAA in a 2018 attack on Gwinnett Medical Center.

Singla's motion to dismiss argued that gov's case lacked constitutionally required specificity.

Congratulations to @riana Riana Pfeffercorn for this brilliant article "Shooting the Messenger: Remediation of Disclosed Vulnerabilities as CFAA “Loss."" It importantly covers the #abuse of the #CFAA to silence #vulnerability researchers due to the low (and arbitrary IMHO) loss threshold for a suit to be brought.

Here's the killer line: "The CFAA still lets litigious vendors “shoot the messenger” by suing over security research that did them no harm. Spending just $5,000 addressing a vulnerability is
sufficient to allow the vendor to sue the researcher who reported it, because such remediation costs qualify as “loss” even in courts that read that term narrowly."

Pfeffercorn proposes tightening the loss definitions & calculus to remove this weapon from the hands of companies suing researchers in bad faith.

This represents a big win for #LinkedIn (and possibly one for #privacy).

If LI can pursue their #CFAA claims against HiQ, that puts some #databrokers in a tight spot: no more scraping our data for free!

But... What this is really about is LI extracting all that sweet, sweet #licensing $$$. Now LI has more leverage and can charge more, but our data is still likely to be shared widely with brokers anyway.
