The successful worldwide ban on ozone depleting substances that began in 1987 has had the unforeseen effect of slowing climate change -- particularly in the Arctic.

[…] However, ongoing emissions of the five CFCs of focus may negate some of the benefits gained under the Montreal Protocol if they continue to rise. In addition, the climate impact of the emissions of these CFCs needs to be considered, as their 2020 emissions are equivalent to 47 ± 5 TgCO2." [as much as the rest]

I’m old enough to remember when the nations of the world got together to ban #cfcs to halt the destruction of the ozone layer. The urgency of the situation was recognised, and appropriate actions were negotiated and implemented.

The current mood regarding the #climateemergency is nothing like that, sadly. We seem to be collectively sleepwalking into the mother of all disasters.

Our solution to environmental pollution has always been to reduce the pollutant at the source (e.g., #CFCs for stratospheric #ozone, SO₂ for acid rain, SOₓ, NOₓ, VOCs, etc. for urban air #pollution) and then let nature heal.

The solution to #CO₂ pollution might be the same. We have to prepare for the possibility that CO₂ removal (#CDR) doesn't work and #reduce #fossil #fuel CO₂ #emissions ASAP.
