I wish #Sully's Op-Ed went further. His point is that fewer hours and sim time do not provide the real-world experience needed for the airlines. Ideally, pilots would get their 1500 hrs in various ways and have the broad experiences he advocates. Sadly, I see pilots building hours, not experience, through repeating the same flights over and over.

Only a definition of what is expected in the 1500 hrs would lead to varied experience

CFI training hit a snag in the form of severe congestion for the last week. It has paired well with my human factors study but not great when I want to actually fly. Haven’t flown in two weeks and getting antsy. :) #cfi #avgeek

Welp. Plan: Finish my right seat checkout. Best laid plans. Even though today was supposed to be light winds. We had 9kt gusting 15. Wasn’t real concerned because it has seemed to be moving toward the rwy heading. However, It was super bumpy. Once in the air, we decided that I wouldn’t be learning a lot teaching wise since I would just be trying to control the aircraft. Came back to a stiff 12kt G18 crosswind. Landing was still right of center but not as bad as previous landings. #cfi #avgeek

First real CFI ground session today. Looked through the PTS, talked about building my binder and went through Human Behavior Task A. Then spent some time talking about how the training will likely proceed. Lots of info to absorb and internalize. Eat an elephant 1 bite at a time they say. It’s also funny that i have a bit of imposter syndrome in that I’m a little worried I won’t be able to fly from the right seat. I’m sure i’ll be fine, it’ll just takes a little transition time #cfi #avgeek

Started working on my first lesson plan. FOI Task A. Built the lesson plan and PowerPoint to go with it. A little freaked out because I have so many more to do. The amount of work is not the problem but the realization that I’m going to need to memorize all of this for the oral is giving me anxiety. My lesson plan notes for task A are about 10 pages. I hope I can reference them during the oral exam. 😬

My wife and I are going to get out of the cold and stay on a horse farm in Fairhope AL for Most of Jan and Feb.

On a whim, I decided to see if the Fairhope or Foley airports need a #CFI while I'm there. If they do, I realized it will be the first time I've instructed outside of my club in 20 years.

Looks like I’m starting CFI training after the first of the year. So doing some light studying. Question though. I understand the FAR and looking up the different regulations that I need to follow and teach. How about Advisory a circular’s. I’ll admit, as a ppl I ignored them but they have a lot of interesting things in there. Is the only really way to know what it contains is to read them all? Is there an alert service for new ones? It’s sort of the chicken/egg thing with them. #CFI #avgeek
