Why this number, when methane is far more damaging in the short term? In part, Trancik says, it was an “accident of history.” Decades ago, when scientists began to tackle the complicated task of comparing different greenhouse gases, most climate projections were looking out to the year 2100—about 100 years in the future."

#TCCON ist ein globales Netzwerk von Bodenstationen, die Treibhausgase wie #CO2, #CH4, #N2O und andere vom Boden bis in ca. 100 km Höhe messen. Die Daten sind unverzichtbar für die weltweiten Treibhausgasmessungen mit Satelliten. Die EU-Kommission möchte von uns, dass wir diese Messungen für die nächsten 20-30 Jahre fortsetzen und ausbauen.

Gestern wurden die Chairs inkl. mir selbst wiedergewählt. Und es ist wohl das erste Mal seit Langem, dass keiner von uns auf einer befristeten Stelle sitzt.

@claasgefroi Ein Kollege zeigte uns heute Flugzeugmessungen vom Juli 2021 über #Frankfurt. Dort sah man in ca. 7 km Höhe eine dünne Schicht mit extrem wenig #CO2, dafür jede Menge #CH4 und CO. Sehr ungewöhnlich!

Er fragte, was wir davon halten. Unser ehemaliger Chef vermutete Probleme mit dem Messgerät. Aber ich habe schon oft in den Tropen Feuer gesehen. Deshalb habe ich gleich auf einen #Waldbrand getippt. Passte auch gut mit der Jahreszeit und der Höhe. Bingo!

#Nature #Asia just cited me in a comment on a paper. It was published by colleagues from #Khalifa #University #UEA. Diane Francis et al. investigated the #methane emissions from the Southern #Arabian #Peninsula, both natural and anthropogenic.

Pretty difficult job as the region is not covered by the #greenhouse #gas #networks like #TCCON, despite being a major #CH4 #emission #hotspot. #Satellite data and #model results are inconsistent. Time for more #observations!

Das passiert auch bei verlassenen Bohrlöchern im Ozean. Hier 🇩🇪 https://www.geomar.de/news/article/neue-studie-bestaetigt-umfangreiche-gasleckagen-in-der-nordsee haben Forscher vom #GEOMAR in Kiel 2020 publiziert, wieviel in einem 20000km2 Gebiet aus 48 Löchern sprudelt.
Das Methan sieht man nicht vom Satellit aus. Darum wird Shaming nicht gemacht wie in Turkmenistan jetzt.

Nur wenn #Methan aus weniger als 200m Tiefe sprudelt, erreicht es die Oberfläche und die Atmosphäre. Die Löcher in der Nordsee liegen wohl tiefer.
Den Ozean mit Methan versauern lassen und dabei Sauerstoff aus dem Tiefenwasser klauen? Egal.

Ne ganz neue Studie hat 14000 alte, unverschlossene Ami-Löcher im Ozean untersucht und Kostenvoranschlag gemacht: 30 Milliarden $ zum Verschließen. 88% der offenen Löcher gehören den fetten BigOil-Firmen...
Von diesen Löchern sind auch welche im flacheren Ozean-Wasser und das #CH4 erreicht die Atmosphäre.

More than 1,000 “super-emitter” sites gushed the potent greenhouse gas methane into the global atmosphere in 2022, the Guardian can reveal, mostly from oil and gas facilities. The worst single leak spewed the pollution at a rate equivalent to 67m running cars.

Separate data also reveals 55 “methane bombs” around the world – fossil fuel extraction sites where gas leaks alone from future production would release levels of methane equivalent to 30 years of all US greenhouse gas emissions.

Methane emissions cause 25% of global heating today and there has been a “scary” surge since 2007, according to scientists. This acceleration may be the biggest threat to keeping below 1.5C of global heating and seriously risks triggering catastrophic climate tipping points, researchers say."
