Arno grew up in the Eifel region where he used to play submarine in empty water tanks - a very risky and by now highly forbidden hobby! After he survived those playtimes he studied European Cultural History in Augsburg, Germany, and is now part of the #ch_ludens project. His research interests are - amongst others - system theory, medicalisation, illness in games, political history of ideas and the politics of pop culture.

His goal for the project is to get a better grip on how content and historical context are interconnected in games. He’s currently playing ‘Mundaun’ and ‘Ball Raider’ and is looking forward to play ‘Atomic Heart’, as he’s curious for its political contents (and to see, what all the buzz was about). For Swiss Games, he looks forward to ‘Antares’, a Sci-Fi-RPG from 1990!

Here is an insight into the current research of our team in Lausanne at UNIL. PhD candidate @SoBemel and postdoc @pyhurel are doing hands-on research on the Smaky. The Smaky was a computing platform, developed at the EPFL in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. Next to playing-as-research, the team at UNIL is looking at the history of Swiss video games through media archeological and sociological methodologies.

So – we’re researching Swiss video games until the year 2000. In the last few months and as part of our project, we* compiled an initial list of over 1200 games from the German-speaking countries… and we're nowhere near finished!

For now, we released the list under CC-BY-SA. Eugen Pfister has written a bit of context and background. You'll find text and list at:

Je ne partage rien ici ces temps mais le projet d'étude du jeu vidéo en Suisse Confederatio Ludens #CH_Ludens a débuté la semaine passée. Nous avons fait une réunion à Berne avec 20 personnes et une nouvelle réunion cette fois juste pour Lausanne avec 6-10 personnes (sur la journée). C'est parti pour 4 ans et… c'est parti très fort !
